Instructions

Before you start

Use a clean blender with enough capacity for your selected quantities, or work in batches. Have your serving glasses ready. Use fresh washed spinach and ready-to-eat berries. Follow any cooking directions on frozen produce and cool it before blending. The optional broccoli sprouts should be thoroughly cooked and cooled, or simply omitted.

  1. Wash the oranges before peeling. Remove the peel and seeds, keeping the juicy flesh and a little soft white pith. Pull away any tough central fibres. Rinse and drain the fresh spinach unless its packaging says it is washed and ready to eat.
  2. Place the dried cranberries and goji berries in a small bowl. Cover with a little of the measured water and leave for 5 minutes to soften. Keep the soaking liquid to add to the blender.
  3. Pour about half the measured water into the blender jug. Add the spinach, ground flaxseeds and chia seeds. If using them, add the thoroughly cooked and cooled broccoli sprouts. Putting liquid in first helps the ingredients circulate.
  4. Add the orange pieces, blueberries, softened dried berries and their soaking liquid. Add the turmeric, ginger and black pepper, plus the optional amla powder. Pour in most of the remaining water, keeping a little back to adjust the texture.
  5. Secure the lid. Start on low speed, then increase gradually and blend for 45–60 seconds, until the greens and berries are evenly dispersed. Stop the blender before scraping the sides. If the mixture will not circulate, add some reserved water and blend again.
  6. Let the smoothie settle for a moment, then taste. Blend in the remaining water a little at a time for a pourable texture. It should taste fruity and gently spicy, with no dry pockets of powder. The seeds thicken the drink as it stands; stir or briefly reblend before pouring.

Pour into serving glasses and enjoy straight away. If preparing ahead, pour into clean covered containers and refrigerate promptly. Stir well before drinking; some separation is normal. For the freshest flavour and texture, make only the amount you plan to use that day.
